Grouper fish

Grouper are a group of generally large carnivorous fishes, generally from the genus Epinephelus or related groups.

The fish are found in temperate and tropical waters. Many are vast and quite tame. In the aquarium, most are sedentary, hiding for most of the time but rushing out occasionally to engulf food with their huge mouths. Grouper live on the sea floor in shallow to mid-range coral reefs.

Grouper fish is a high-value farmed fish. In Asia, grouper have been grown in sea cages and sold into the live fish trade. Taiwan is the world’s largest grouper producing country accounting for about 58% of grouper production in the world.

This fish are generally very hardy and tolerant of poor conditions. All groupers have a stocky, very powerful body with spiny fins, and tend to wedge themselves immovably into caves in the coral when frightened.
