Geographical Distribution: Stretching across the Indo-West Pacific region, from Pakistan to the Philippines and Indonesia, and reaching northward to the South China Sea and southward to Queensland.
Pholas orientalis, a marine mollusk recognizable by its slender, elongated shells joined by a flexible ligament along the sagittal plane, is suitable for consumption and can be purchased in fresh or dried forms in regions like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines.
In the Philippines, these mollusks are esteemed as a culinary delicacy. Their tender texture, sweet juiciness, and distinctive flavor have elevated them to a primary source of sustenance for numerous coastal fishermen. Additionally, they have gained popularity as an enticing culinary attraction in major urban hubs and towns throughout the area.
Known scientifically as Pholas orientalis, the Oriental angel wing burrows into muddy sandy substrates either along the shoreline or within the sub-littoral zone, particularly in places dominated by compact bluish-gray muddy sand. They can tunnel to depths exceeding 0.3 meters and once extracted, they cannot return to their burrows.
Sexual maturity is reached when shell length measures 59 mm in males and 64 mm in females. Each mature individual houses a reproductive organ embedded in the ventral side of the visceral region. The reproductive organs of both males and females share a branching structure and exhibit identical coloration.
