In the late 1970s, carbon fiber rods emerged, marking a significant technological advancement in fly fishing. Lighter than both bamboo and fiberglass, carbon fiber rods allowed anglers to cast farther with greater ease. The lighter rod made the weight of the fly line more critical in determining the rod’s performance, with rods being designed to match specific line weights for optimal results. Fly rods are typically designed with either a tip action or a through action, impacting how the rod bends and handles during casting. Tip action rods flex primarily near the tip, offering faster response times and greater control.
